AbbVie
Redefining what it means to see the person behind the patient
Challenge
The paradox: an invisible medical giant.
How can a company touch 50 million lives across 75 conditions and remain unknown to the public? AbbVie was an invisible industry leader. Delivering breakthrough science without building the recognition, or trust, it needed to connect in a radically human way.
Solution
The person behind the patient.
We began by analyzing past campaigns, brand reputation data, and focus group feedback. Our research exposed a powerful truth: People living with chronic conditions are tired of being “patients.” They are mothers, scientists, dreamers, and friends. We made a radical shift. We shifted the spotlight from the corporation to the individual. The result was I AM—a campaign that refused to let a diagnosis define a life.
Real people drive real engagement.
This wasn’t a scripted campaign; it was an unfiltered declaration of identity. We asked eight patients and nine AbbVie employees to share their own stories—unscripted, unfiltered, and unmistakably human. Knowing that real stories carry more weight than broad corporate messaging. We used film and photography to share insights about how AbbVie’s biopharma breakthroughs in the lab translated to breakthroughs in people’s lives. Positioning AbbVie as an ally that sees people for who they are, not the condition they have.
Results
The pulse of success, a surge in engagement.
The impact was a revolution in engagement and reputation. AbbVie’s feature became the most-read branded article on The Washington Post in 2025. With engagement rates 6x the benchmark. Employee engagement nearly doubled, and organic conversation rose by 29%. Market confidence boomed, with a 34% increase in AbbVie’s stock price. We proved that when you lead with humanity, the world doesn’t just listen. It connects. It trusts. It champions.

“I AM shows people they’re not alone. Letting AbbVie be an advocate who empowers the people we serve has created an impact that ripples far beyond the campaign itself.”
